Historicisme en zijn Monsters

Dit artikel is een Nederlandse vertaling van de rede die Marcel Boumans heeft uitgesproken bij de aanvaarding van het ambt van hoogleraar Geschiedenis van de Economische Wetenschap aan de Universiteit Utrecht op 9 december 2021. De oratie duikt in de wetenschapsgeschiedenis voor een verklaring van hoe de sociale wetenschappen bepalen wat normaal is. Boumans laat zien hoe statistisch onderzoek (inclusief machine learning) haar eigen monsters creëert. In een ‘historicistische’ benadering van de wetenschap worden deze monsters als gevaarlijk gezien, omdat ze de orde verstoren. Boumans pleit voor het omgekeerde: verwelkom de afwijking van de norm. Dat past bij de open houding van de wetenschap.
